Dr. Stefan Mair

Dr. Stefan Mair, Executive Chairman and Director of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) Stefan Mair has served as Executive Chairman of the German Institute for International and Security Affairs (SWP) and Director of its research institute in Berlin since October 2020. After studying political science, economics, and sociology at LMU Munich, he earned his Ph.D. (Dr. rer. pol.) from LMU Munich with a fellowship from the ifo Institute for Economic Research in Munich. From 1992 to 2010, he held various positions at SWP, first as an Africa specialist, then as head of the Africa and Middle East Research Group, and finally as a member of the institute’s executive board and as research director. From 2010 to 2020, he was a member of the Executive Board of the Federation of German Industries (BDI), with overall responsibility for European and international economic relations. His current research focuses on foreign policy challenges facing Germany and the EU, geopolitical and geoeconomic dynamics, and foreign trade policy.
