Prof. Dr. Meike Jipp

Executive Vice President for Energy and Transportation, Deutsches Zentrum für Luft- und Raumfahrt e.V. (DLR)

Prof. Meike Jipp has served as the new Executive Director for Energy and Transportation at the German Aerospace Center (DLR) since August 1, 2023. The division is distinguished by its research and development of new technologies, as well as the integration of these technologies. This enables the fulfillment of societal needs and the development of competitive products. Meike Jipp studied psychology with a minor in computer science at the University of Mannheim and Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada. After completing her doctorate and a postdoctoral fellowship, also at the University of Mannheim, Prof. Jipp began her career at DLR in 2010.

As a project manager and research associate at the DLR Institute of Flight Guidance, she focused on improving human-technology interaction in the field of air traffic control. At the beginning of 2014, Meike Jipp took over as head of the “Driver Cognition and Modeling” group at the DLR Institute of Transportation Systems. Between 2015 and 2020, she headed the “Human Factors” department at the same institute and, between 2017 and 2019, also served as acting head of the “Testing” department. In 2017, Jipp also earned her habilitation at the Faculty of Life Sciences at the Technical University of Braunschweig. At the beginning of 2021, she assumed the directorship of the DLR Institute of Transport Research as well as the special professorship in “Transport Demand and Impacts” at the Technical University of Berlin.

In her research, Meike Jipp has focused on the analysis, evaluation, and optimization of transportation systems: Why do people travel the way they do? How does mobility behavior change when spaces, services, or modes of transportation are designed differently? How do people interact with complex systems? How should complex systems be designed to achieve specific goals? Interdisciplinarity is a hallmark of Prof. Jipp’s work.

Among other roles, Jipp is co-chair of the “Climate Protection in Mobility” expert advisory board of the Federal Ministry of Digital and Transport (BMDV) and spokesperson for the “Transport, Mobility, and Logistics” cluster in Berlin-Brandenburg. She is also a full member of the German Academy of Science and Engineering (acatech) and the Braunschweig Scientific Society (BWG).
